Born in a manger, buried in a borrowed grave–poor, obscure for most of his life–considered mad and tormented when he began to preach–scorned for his teachings by the theologians of his day–followed mainly by the dregs of society– misunderstood and abandoned by even his closest friends–left to die alone and humiliated in the hands of his enemies…

Who Did He Say He Was?

This man, Jesus Christ, spoke of himself in a way that compels us to consider him. He claimed to be:

  • A teacher whose doctrine should be accepted without question.
  • An absolutely faultless person.
  • A prophet who could foretell his own death and resurrection.
  • The creator of the universe.
  • The final judge of the world.
  • GOD HIMSELF, in the form of man.

Who Is Jesus?
C.S. Lewis, who was a professor at Cambridge University and once an agnostic, wrote, “I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic–on the level with a man who says he is a poached egg–or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice.” So then, either Jesus was deliberately lying, or he was a lunatic, or he was telling the truth and he is indeed Lord and God, as he said he was.

Was He a Liar?
If Jesus claimed to be God and his claims were false, and he knew they were false, then he was a liar. And if this be the case, then he was also a hypocrite, because he taught others to be honest whatever the cost, while he himself was teaching and living a colossal lie. Jesus taught others to trust him for their eternal destiny. If he knew he could not back up his claims, then Jesus was also unspeakably evil. Lastly, he would also be a fool, because it was the result of his claims to being God which led him to be crucified. There are men who will die for a lie and not know it’s a lie. But there are few, virtually none, who will die for a lie knowing it’s a lie, without confessing it at the point of death. Aside from all this, what could Jesus have hoped to gain by the lie he propagated? He lived and died in poverty; he had no earthly kingdom to aspire to; and he didn’t win any popularity contests, that’s for sure.

A Lunatic Perhaps?
Another alternative might be that Jesus was sincerely deluded– that he taught and lived a lie, not realizing that it was a lie. We must remember that for a man to think he is God in a fiercely monotheistic culture, and then tell others that their eternal destiny depends upon believing in him, is not mere whimsical fantasy, but the thoughts of a lunatic. Was Jesus such a man? Men living under strong delusions of grandeur and other similar psychotic disorders display characteristics of disorientation, confused and unbalanced thinking, contradictory behavior, as well as deep depressions and other emotional disturbances.

Contrary to all this, Jesus was a man who had no doubts as to where he was going. He amazed multitudes by the authority with which he spoke. He never once retracted or contradicted previous teachings. Some of the best minds of the Jewish culture attempted to trick Jesus with difficult questions. However, in spite of these pressures, Jesus always remained calm and peaceful. In fact, Jesus’ answers always turned the tables on these eminent religious leaders, and made them appear as fools.

Who Then?
In this short paper, we cannot fully explore all the evidence, but still the conclusion we must reach is obvious: Jesus is Lord and God. However, many people reject the clear evidence because of the moral implications involved. There needs to be a moral honesty within the individual when he considers the evidence of Jesus being a liar, lunatic, or Lord and God

Who you decide Jesus Christ is, must not be an idle intellectual exercise. Once you realize that Jesus claimed to be much more than a great moral teacher, then you must decide if he is a liar, lunatic, or Lord. You must make the choice.

Right now you can get your life in right relationship with God. Here is what you must do:

Admit that you have sinned against God.

Believe that Jesus Christ paid for your sins and rose from the dead.

Decide to let Jesus Christ be Lord of your life and to allow Him to guide and direct you.

Ask Jesus Christ to forgive your sins and come into your life and make you the kind of person He wants you to be. God wants to put His Spirit inside you so that you will have the ability to live for Him.

“Jesus I know that I have sinned against you. I believe that you died for my sins and rose from the dead. Now I ask you to be Lord of my life. Come into my life and make me the kind of person you want me to be. Show me each day what you want me to do. Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life with you.”
